The day the music died

Today my iPod decided to die with the "folder and exclamation point" error:

iPod exclamation point error

Unfortunately none of Apple's troubleshooting suggestions worked (typical), and I couldn't get my computer to recognize it as a Firewire device any more. The hard disk seemed to be dead since I couldn't hear it spinning or seeking when turning on the iPod.

The warranty expired a long time ago, so I opened it up to see if there was anything loose or obviously wrong. I didn't see anything, so I guess I'll be getting a new one. I was planning to anyway, but I wanted to wait until the next version, with the rumored full-size screen. Oh well.

Here are some pictures of the insides of the iPod:

  1. Well, that’s certainly a new look to an iPod. Anyway, just dropping by to say ‘hi’ and to see how you were doing. Thx for letting me join your LinkedIn network, btw. 🙂

  2. Sure, no problem! It was nice to hear from you 🙂

  3. Aw no, that’s a real shame… mine is still going strong – remember that I bought mine about a week after you got yours? So I guess that means mine will expire next week then. 🙁

Obvious question: did you drop it at any point? I believe I dropped mine once and only once about four feet onto a tiled floor. I think it was off.

  4. I don’t recall ever dropping it onto a hard surface or from a great height, but every once in a while it would fall off a chair onto the carpet or something like that. Hopefully yours doesn’t die next week!

  5. Awe, that’s a sad story. I bought a 60GB 3rd generation iPod ,like yours, off eBay. It worked great for about six month or so and now it finally gave out on me. It was rather old at the time of purchase, but it ran well. The only problem I had with it is that it would freeze often, but after a few 10-second-resets, it would be fine. The last few days before it got all washed up, there were some warning signs. It was taking a long time to load songs and when I clicked on a song, it would often just go to some random song. That could be resolved by simply clicking it again. Then, in it’s final hours, it started jumping through a whole bunch of songs before it would play the song. So I gave it a rest. The next time I tried it out, it just gave me the same silly response it did you, “!.” So, thats the heartbreaking story of my big white iPod. And the crowds go wild… so think I have too much time on my hands? No, I don’t, I just don’t use the time well.

It’s a tale that takes you on a rollercoaster ride, and just when you think it leaves you in suspense, it kicks you right in the teeth with a big shocker. The critics rage, and the crowds go wild… so, think I have too much time on my hands? I don’t, I just don’t use my time well. Anywho, peace.

  7. I know, you’ve heard enough from me, but I should throw in this last apology. Sorry about the double post. If you click on my name in the preceding comment, it will take you nowhere important. I’ll try this comment, but it may not work either. Once again, peace.
