Dead bulb

My projector's bulb died this week after 600 hours, when it was rated for 2000 hours. Grr! Nobody seems to have them in stock right now, and I'm not going to pay Sony the full retail price for a new one ($350!?), so it looks like I'll be stuck for a couple of weeks unable to play Wii or watch Netflix movies. Oh well.. It's a good thing I just canceled my cable TV.

The actual bulb looks pretty weird - here's a pic:

  1. That’s a bummer, those things aren’t cheap. Can’t you get Sony to replace it for free?

I guess the question is- is it worth paying 350$ for a bulb or X many hours trying to get a free bulb, that you rightfully deserve…

  2. Sony won’t give me a free one since it’s past the 90 day warranty, and 600 hours is supposedly in the “normal range” of their “bulb bell curve.”

I found a bulb for $250 on the internet and ordered it, but apparently when they said “in stock” that meant “in stock, in a couple of weeks.” I’m too lazy to cancel the order and find another place. Oh well..

  3. if 600 hours is the “normal range” then why do they say it’ll last 2000 hours??? thats quite a large range of acceptable hours.

  4. Yes that is basically it – the range is very big. Here is a diagram:

  5. Suckage, as they say in England.

I realise it’s a bright bulb, but how do you make a bulb that costs $350?

BTW, I bet 2000 hours is close to the right hand side of your graph rather than 4000. 😉

  6. Is that really what they say in England?
I noticed that a google for “suckage site:uk” comes up with only 1500 results, but “suckage site:com” comes up with half a million.. just curious ;P

  7. Hmm, probably because .com isn’t used exclusively for the USA. So many people in England own .coms because they are the TLD to have.

  8. Weird, WordPress wasn’t letting your comment through for some reason until I deleted the PHP cache.. not sure what’s up with that

  9. Yeah, the front page of your site said “7 comments”, but only the first six were showing on the actual article page. Let’s see if it happens again.

  10. I have to shift-reload (Firefox) to get my comments to show up. This didn’t work yesterday.
