Parity Error

This recently started happening to my laptop, whose warranty conveniently just expired. Note the random colored dots all over the blue screen of death - I can actually see memory errors occurring in the VRAM as they happen.
Time to add Dell to the List of Companies Never to Buy a Laptop From Again.
Sadly, the List already contains Apple after my PowerBook's hard disk controller died and they wanted more than $1000 to fix it. Though the new 15" MacBook Pro with the LED-backlit screen does look really nice... I may have to grant them amnesty.
Unfortunately any other laptop companies are going to be just as bad - if they're successful they will be equally as guilty of screwing the customer over in order to minimize costs.
At least the Apple laptops are fun to use before they die..

I’ve always had luck with getting my Dell laptops serviced, even once when the warranty was expired and the malfunction was due to dropping it.

I recently switched to the Macbook Pro about a month ago from an HP. The HP had some serious hardware issues…
Anyway, I’ve had zero problems with my new Mac (even when running XP on it).
If you’re really worried about the warranty, you can always opt for the Apple Care plan (though its $349)…

I’d love to recommend a laptop brand, but I can’t. I’d recommend Toshiba, but the VRAM desoldered itself in my old one. I think they have remedied that in newer machines, though.
My MacBook Pro has already had its motherboard and latch mechanism replaced due to a standby issue, but the latch has failed again, since it comes out of sleep when transporting it with the lid closed.
Anyway, to fix your problem, you need to blast the BGA VRAM chips with a heat gun till the solder reflows (assuming that is the problem). It worked for me on my Toshiba laptop. Let me know if you need any tips on how to do it.

Hmm good comments. I think I’ll try and see what the Dell service options are (as much as I hate mailing it away only to be broken even more), and then if that doesn’t work maybe checking out the VRAM chips.

that sucks. My dell is still running strong wo any problems, but seems like dell quality has gone down over the years.
