So fortunately it ends up that the brake lights on the 2006 GTI are actually user-serviceable, but it requires a few more steps than on a 1984 Buick. First, the molding behind the the light must be peeled back and the light enclosure unscrewed:
Then the entire enclosure can be removed:
And the bulb holder can be extracted:
Finally we can replace the actual bulb and notice a tiny break in the filament of the broken one:

I find that those Tide-To-Go sticks are good for that. Just keep one back there, or in your glove box.
Also, are you green-eyed?

Yep: green-eyed. I swear they used to be blue, but not any more I guess. I don’t know why that picture makes it look like my pupil is all green instead of black. Glare, I guess. I just tried photoshopping it out but can’t make it look right.

Eye color is sort of fascinating in the spectrum of genetics. Green really surprises me, the more I think about it, because it’s sort of not supposed to happen. Blue and brown have specific alleles, but green doesn’t. I’m pretty sure you can only get green eyes if you have the recessive alleles (blue), but I could be wrong. And yeah, eye color can easily change, which is also strange. A lot like hair color changes with age.
I have to get contacts/glasses soon, unfortunately, but I was thinking of going green for a change. Might be sort of striking, who knows. Not that I don’t like my eye color.

You made me curious too so I checked The Oracle and it sounds like there’s a separate gene for green eyes, but it wasn’t completely clear.
It also says that green eyes are the rarest (2%), so yeah if you switch to green eyes you might be even more striking than usual.
