0 Day Delivery

The most amazing thing happened today: I ordered some stuff on Amazon this morning, and it was delivered before I got home. I was completely stunned and surprised, because I submitted my order with the standard 2 day shipping and didn't see anything about same-day delivery. I was also surprised that the package was just outside my door and they didn't deliver it to the apartment office in order to get a signature.

The package was shipped by some company I've never heard of, called Dynamex. I can't find anything about this on Amazon's website. I'm curious about whether this is a new standard, or if it is some sort of beta program being tested in select areas? What's going on here?

This is a big step that could really impact how I use Amazon. Typically, it feels like I get the desire to have a new book or toy on Saturday or Sunday afternoon, at which point I have to decide how much I really need whatever it is. If it's urgent, then I usually have to go to Borders, because if I order it on Amazon, it won't be shipped until Monday, and if I'm lucky it will be delivered on Wednesday, but it'll get delivered to the apartment office which will be closed when I get home, so I'll only be able to pick it up on Thursday morning on the way to work. With this same-day delivery, that huge wait time is almost eliminated (of course they probably wouldn't deliver on weekends, but still).

Amazon Same Day Delivery Order

Here's a picture of my October 13th order, actually in my hands on October 13th. The weird thing is that I had already looked through all the toy stores in suburban Seattle trying to find a Rubik's cube (apparently there's a "Rubik's Liquidity Crisis" going on, because they were all out). I had resigned myself to ordering it on Amazon and waiting a week, yet here it is and I have it on the same day. Wow.

  1. Thats awesome! I can’t wait until they do that in my area…

I would think this has to be some kind of beta program. Enjoy it while it is only the cost of two-day shipping. Once it becomes an option at checkout, it will probably cost more than one-day shipping.

  2. I’m not sure if it would actually cost more than 1-day shipping. I assume that it’ll only be offered if they have the item in stock at a local warehouse, in which case they just have to drive it over. One-day shipping costs so much because it usually involves an airplane flight.

  3. Hooray for (almost) instant gratification!

    This can’t be your first Rubik’s cube…

  4. whoops…that anonymous comment was from me…

  5. True, the cost of same-day delivery might be less. But, if you really really want the item same day, most people would be willing to pay more than overnight…Just so they could have it sooner. Its kind of like the difference between overnight by 10:30am and overnight by 3:30pm…No extra cost is involved (usually) on part of the courier, but they charge more because you want it more.

  6. Eric! I KNOW where all the Rubik’s Cubes are hiding! I stopped at Big Lots (do y’all have Big Lots there? Discount-ish bargain-y place.) last night in search of a toaster oven (always check Big Lots first!) and I went through the toy section. I was looking for a treat for my pen pal (part of a literacy program at work)and there on the wall hung about 50 authentic Rubik’s Cubes! I don’t know how much you paid for yours, but they were $9.50.
Products often go to Big Lots when companies are ready to change the packaging. So, maybe the Cube Dudes are getting ready to do something glitzy…
If you want to stock up, let me know! I’ll ship ‘em to ya!

  7. Hmm, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of Big Lots before, so maybe we don’t have them here. But there’s probably some sort of similar discount/bargain stores that I’m not aware of.

My cube also cost $9 something, so that’s about the same. I actually only need one right now, so I’m good. But thanks! Maybe if I was making Rubik’s Cube murals like these guys: http://www.space-invaders.com/rubikubism.html
