Yeah I think the Nook is pretty compelling. It matches or beats the Kindle on almost all stats. I haven't seen one in person yet, but I hear you can do that at a B&N store. Might be worth checking out!

I know I'm commenting a million months later but I haven't read this for a while (Sorry Eric!) I'm really looking into getting the Nook. I have the Sony Ebook reader and I love it but the nook lets you share your books and has the wireless connectivity that I don't get with the ebook reader. It's kind of a pain to have to plug it into my computer and load up the sony ebook store EVERY time I want a new book. What do you think?

The wireless connectivity wouldn't be so important to me (even though Kindle uses one of my company's parts) so I'd choose the Sony reader over the Kindle (same size screen, smaller overall size, no charge to view own files - if this still exists on Kindle). But I couldn't buy one of these whilst they are still enforcing the "no electronic devices" during takeoff and landing on planes. The real reason they don't want you to be listening to an iPod during takeoff and landing is in case of important announcements. An eBook should be treated just like a regular book for this reason.

I see the benefits, but I love paper way too much to give up hauling around a book or two, even on a long flight. (I have this nice bag that my Mom made...holds a book or two and other goodies we need on the plane, yet isn't bulky enough to get in the way of other passengers.) There is a romance to paper that even the coolest gadget can't replace...

At the time when I bought it, Sony only had the old generation of its eBook readers, which didn't compete at all. But the new devices Sony just announced have wireless and touch screens, so they are probably much more competitive. But they still don't have the book selection that Amazon does.

Did you consider the Sony eBook readers also? If so, I'd like to know what you thought of them.
